Club Sports

Our list of club sports reflects our commitment to provide our athletes with every opportunity available. We offer sailing and girls' crew as competitive club sports and surfing as non-competitive club sport.

Any student interested in sailing - regardless of his/her level of expertise - is welcome to join our sailing team. You must, of course, be able to swim! The season starts in early March. Our head sailing coach is Joe Cooper ("comfortable in a boat since I was four") who is in his 9th season coaching Prout's sailing team.

We sail from Sail Newport, located in Ft. Adams State Park in Newport on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3-6pm. We also sail on some Fridays in April and May at the Friday Night Lights series, which takes place at Sail Newport and Newport Yacht Club.

We sail two-person dinghies called 420's, 4.2 meters long, or about 14 feet. We compete in team racing, an exciting subset of sailboat racing, and fleet racing. We compete against about 12 other local high school teams. Last season, Prout's team won 4 of 5 Friday Night Lights, qualified for the regional qualifier for nationals, and was second in the states.

Big Win for Sailing Team

Four Prout sailing team members combined to finish second out of 14 teams in May 2018's Rebecca Herreshoff Memorial Womens Regatta at Roger Williams University in Bristol.
