220 Honors English 10

Grade 10, 1 credit
Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Honors Ninth Grade English and Meeting The Prout School’s Criteria for Honors Placement

Sophomore Honors English is designed to give students an understanding of the history, development, and major themes of American Literature. Students apply critical, analytical, and reflective strategies in studying a variety of genre, including early American historical documents, novels, plays, short stories, and poetry. The course is a literary investigating exploring a year long thematic analysis of what is meant by The American Dream.

Formal expository writing, as well as continued metacognitive reader response writing, is further developed. Students continue their study of vocabulary and conventions of written and oral language. In addition, students further develop their strategies for engagement in respectful analytical inquiry and dialogue.

All honors sophomores complete a unit on the research process, which culminates in their writing an eight to ten page analytical paper.
