College Prep English 12
Grade 12, 1 credit
Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Eleventh Grade English
Senior English is designed to prepare students for college level literature courses, focusing on developing analytical and writing skills through the exploration of world literature. The works studied integrate a wide range of authors and countries such as Mexico, South America, Russia, Africa, Britain, the United States, India, and Algeria. Students analyze, discuss, and write about this literature in the context of what connects these works to each other (what universal themes they explore), and what makes each work unique. Throughout the year, students work on fine tuning their writing, discussion, and analysis strategies. Through oral presentations and class discussions, students will further develop their verbal communication skills.
Emphasis is placed on further utilizing expository thesis writing, as well as metacognitive reader response papers. All college preparatory seniors complete a unit on the research process, which culminates in their writing a fourteen to sixteen page analytical paper.
