History
The Social Studies Department aims to instill within students a global awareness and the social responsibilities that are implied therein. The department strives to fully develop the concept of community as well as the duties, responsibilities and privileges which accompany community membership. Students are encouraged to retain their own individuality and to focus on the Christian concepts of truth and justice exemplified in the Gospel as basic components of the community. All departmental courses aim at the student’s development of a greater understanding of the development, advancement, differences, and similarities of societies and cultures. There is an exploration of global economic and political systems. There is a concentration on communication skills, to develop research skills and problem-solving techniques, to acquire work habits that are both independent and cooperative, and to achieve proficiency in interpretative skills relating to maps, graphs, timelines, charts, and cause-and-effect relationships.
