223 Honors English 12

Grade 12, 1 credit
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Honors English 11 and Meeting The Prout School’s Criteria for Honors Placement

Honors English 12 is the culmination of the English program. The course has four main goals:
1. To help students become life-long learners in the context of the Catholic Christian tradition
2. To foster in students an appreciation of World Literature and English Studies in general.
3. To prepare students for college-level work
4. To further develop students’ critical thinking, reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities.

Students in this course will be reading and writing the same types of assignments found at the college level.  Students will gain a wider perspective of the human experience as they discern their place in the world. Works in all genres from various time periods will make up the readings. This course will also include a survey of various approaches to literary criticism and theory (existentialism, Christian theory, cultural studies, etc.) students will most likely read in college. Students will engage in a wide variety of learning activities, including group projects, media presentations, and other creative endeavors, some of them unrelated to literature. Writing response, thesis and research papers will be common in this course, as will prewriting activities, peer revision and self evaluation. Portfolio work will reinforce self-evaluation. Students are also required to give oral presentations and lead class discussions.  All honors seniors complete a unit on the research process, which culminates in their writing a fourteen to sixteen page analytical paper.
